Juice is the most natural way to deal with flu

6 December 2009 / ZEYNEP KAÇMAZ , İSTANBUL
Experts stress that fruits and fruit juice should be consumed to keep immune systems healthy and protect against the flu.
A strengthened immune system is key to staving off influenza; this is improved with the consumption of healthy foods. Those who prefer not to consume much fruit should drink juice instead.

Dietician Hayrettin Mutlu, from Sema Hospital, confirms that natural fruit beverages are among the best protectors against the flu. Pointing out that water is crucial for the body’s overall health, Mutlu further says: “More than half of our body is water. For this reason, an adult should drink at least two liters of water on a daily basis.” Mutlu notes that in particular, orange, pomegranate, grape, lemon, carrot and tangerine juices should be drunk regularly. Mixtures of orange, tangerine and lemon are the best option; Mutlu says that the mixtures are more efficient and influential in combating the flu. Mutlu also says a person should not drink more than two to three glasses of fruit juice a day, adding that two to four portions of solid fruits should also be eaten in addition to the two to three glasses of juice a day.

Asked whether herbal teas or fruit beverages are more helpful in preventing the flu, Mutlu said that natural fruit juice is the best option. Mutlu also said, “Herbal teas, served hot, are key to getting rid of the flu, whereas vitamin and mineral-rich fruit juices are helpful in strengthening the immune system.”

Tips to prepare fresh fruit juices:

*The fruit should be squeezed manually, if possible. Fruits squeezed by electronic machines lose vitamins because of the metal components.

*You should use a blender to create a mash of starchy fruits, as their juice is very difficult to squeeze; the mash may be mixed with any fruit juice. Oranges should be squeezed with their rind intact.

Pear juice with cinnamon: Wash four pears and divide each into quarters; squeeze these pieces with a peeled orange; add a teaspoon of cinnamon; serve fresh.

Tomato juice with celery: Wash one stalk of fresh celery; squeeze five midsize tomatoes in a blender; add salt and black pepper before serving.

Experts believe that herbal teas are helpful in coping with swine flu. Mint, lemon and linden ease the impact of the flu owing to the vitamin content. For this reason, herbal teas should be drunk in winter; the addition of lemon and mint is recommended for extra vitamins and minerals.

Winter tea: Rinse and boil sage, linden, ginger, cinnamon, carnation and rose hip; brew the mixture and serve hot.
