Turkey steps up efforts for Bosnia’s NATO bid

5 December 2009 / TODAY’S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, ANKARA
Turkey has intensified diplomatic efforts to persuade NATO to offer a Membership Action Plan (MAP) -- an essential steppingstone towards membership in the alliance -- to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

On the second day of a foreign ministers’ meeting of the alliance, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu introduced a draft that proposes giving MAP to Bosnia and Herzegovina on the condition that the Balkan country continues its reforms, the Anatolia news agency reported on Friday.

“A methodical mistake should be avoided on the issue of Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose people have been subject to much trauma and need psychological support. Instead of the approach of ‘first stick, then carrot,’ the approach of ‘first carrot, then stick’ should be assumed,” Davutoğlu was quoted by the Anatolia news agency as telling his NATO counterparts during meetings seeking support for the draft. In an interview with the BBC, Davutoğlu underlined that Bosnians feel left out by the European Union, which has recently extended visa-free travel to Serbia and Montenegro. “Now if they feel isolated from the support of NATO, it will be a big problem,” Davutoğlu said.
