Spain jobless claims up again

2 December 2009 / AP, MADRID
The number of people seeking unemployment benefits in Spain rose by 60,593 last month and by a total of nearly 900,000 over the past year, the government reported Wednesday.

The total number of people in Spain seeking joblessness benefits is now 3,868,946, the Labor and Immigration Ministry said.

It was the fourth monthly increase in a row after claims numbers had dropped for three straight months over the summer period.

November's increase was much smaller than that of October, which was about 99,000. In November 2008, there was an increase of just over 171,000.

Maravillas Rojo, secretary general at the Labor Ministry, played up the fact that the increases are getting smaller in the recession-plagued country.

They "are gradually getting close to levels associated with economic growth," she said in a statement.

In two years, Spain has swung from being Europe's top job creator to having the region's highest unemployment rate -- 17.9 percent at the end of the third quarter -- due in large part to the collapse of its construction industry.
