Turkey's EU membership win-win situation, Turkey's chief negotiator

1 December 2009 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, STOCKHOLM
Turkey's chief negotiator for European Union accession talks has said his country's membership to the Union would benefit both Turkey and the EU.

"Our government is determined to continue passing reforms that move Turkey closer to the EU accession and our membership would be a win-win situation," State Minister Egemen Bağış told the opening of the 27th Turkey-EU Joint Consultative Committee meeting in Stockholm.

Bağış said Turkey had opened 11 policy chapters in its accession negotiations so far, adding that future chapters needed more crucial legal arrangements and adjustments.

Bağış said Turkey's accession process had been hampered due to reasons that belonged to certain member countries as 18 policy chapters were somehow blocked from opening.

"There are only six policy chapters available for us on which we can work to meet the opening criteria. The EU member countries must review their attitude. Despite all hindrances, negative attitudes, and foreign and domestic resistance, our accession process is continuing. We do not demand any special treatment but we do not want any discrimination, either," Bağış said.
