President Gül on minaret referendum in Switzerland

1 December 2009 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, ANKARA
Turkish President Abdullah Gül said on Tuesday that "minaret referendum" held in Switzerland was contrary to fundamental rights and freedoms.

"This is a shame for the Swiss," President Gül told reporters prior to his departure for Jordan on a formal visit.

Commenting on the minaret referendum held in Switzerland, Gül said, "this issue should be monitored seriously. It is a striking element to display how Islamophobia develops in the Western world."

Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said Tuesday the referendum held in Switzerland on November 29 to ban the construction of minarets in this country caused "disappointment".

The MFA said both Turkey and the international community expected Switzerland to take steps to correct the situation (on minarets) that was not in line with the traditions of Switzerland.
