Exports to neighbors take 7.7 percent dive

Turkey’s exports to its seven neighboring countries fell by 7.7 percent during the recent global economic crisis, according to data from Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat).

According to the data, exports to these seven countries accounted for 13.5 percent of all Turkey’s exports in the January-September period, totaling $9.9 billion. Exports in the same period of last year were $10.7 billion, marking a 7.7 percent drop.

Within this group of seven, made up of Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Greece, Iraq took the greatest share of Turkey’s total exports, making up 5.1 percent with $3.8 billion, with also the greatest increase in exports from Turkey, at 40.6 percent, compared to the same period last year. Exports to Bulgaria and Greece were hardest hit, with drops of 42.4 and 39.1 percent, respectively. The only countries to experience increases in imports from Turkey were Iraq and Syria.
