Former Mayor of İstanbul Bedrettin Dalan, who is named as a suspect at large in the Ergenekon investigation, was spotted at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport yesterday, accompanied by an individual identified as Dr. İlker Kayabeyoğlu.

Pictures taken yesterday sent in by the Cihan news agency show Dalan first leaving the Marriott Hotel in Amsterdam and then at Schiphol Airport. It was not clear whether he was leaving the country.

Dalan is the founder of the İstek Foundation, on whose land in Poyrazköy a large number of guns and a sizable amount of ammunition were found buried earlier this year in an excavation carried out as part of the investigation into Ergenekon, a clandestine terrorist organization accused of plotting to overthrow the government.

Dalan went to the US before a wave of detentions in the investigation in January. The Star daily claimed that Dalan now manages his companies in Turkey in cooperation with a Russian company which is known to have contacts with Levent Ersöz, a retired general who is currently one of the prime suspects in the Ergenekon case. The prosecution accuses Dalan of acting as one of the senior administrators of Ergenekon. Currently, some 150 suspects are standing trial on charges of membership in Ergenekon.

In August, the Star daily claimed that Dalan had moved to Russia in late July after the United States refused to extend his visa.

The daily claimed that Dalan first moved to South America after the US declined to extend his visa in July. The former mayor later moved to Russia toward the end of last month, where he frequently changes locations. How and when he reached the Netherlands is not yet clear.
