Barzani: Kurdish initiative must include PKK

27 November 2009 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Senior Iraqi Kurdish leader Nechirvan Barzani called on Turkey to include the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) terrorist organization in its efforts to resolve the decades-old Kurdish issue, saying otherwise the initiative will not be successful, during a speech on local Kurdish TV on Thursday.

The government has launched the Kurdish initiative to resolve the Kurdish problem by expanding democratic rights for Turkey’s Kurdish population, but it rejects dialogue with the PKK, claiming that it needs to lay down its arms.

“If the aim is to finish the process with success, then the democratic initiative should also include the PKK,” Barzani said. Barzani supports the democratic initiative and said Turkey is taking significant steps to solve the problems of its Kurdish citizens.  He said Turkey should be realistic and recognize the PKK terrorist organization as a side during the initiative. “The chances of the process being successful are impossible without the PKK,” Barzani stressed.
