Arınç did not name any institutions, but Ergenekon’s most influential suspected members have been retired generals and some lower-ranking officials on active duty.
Speaking to members of the press on Wednesday at the Prime Ministry, Arınç said if such individuals had been discovered in an institution under him, he would “do what was necessary.”
Stating that he wished to see Turkey as a land where the rule of law is fully applied, Arınç said such illegal formations should be eliminated. The deputy prime minister stated that people who have been implicated in illegal actions should be removed from whatever institution they are members of.
Saying nothing remains secret in Turkey, Arınç stated that all state agencies should understand this and promote transparency and accountability in their operations. He said no institution that ignores this would be immune from damaging their reputation. “[What you should do is] not cover up or point at other targets or place the ball in some other court. If you can’t account for things, you will not be acquitted in the conscience of the public.”
Arınç also criticized some newspapers that have not covered the stories on the recent discovery of the Cage plan.
He said the Cage plan envisaged massacres of people, even children, and criticized some newspapers and television stations for not writing or airing anything about it. Arınç said: “Half of our media have not covered this story at all. It is impossible to find a single word on the television stations or in the newspapers of very strong media groups.” He said these outlets should consider the possibility that the Cage Plan is an authentic document.
He said he hoped that the Cage plan was not real, adding, “But what if it is true?” He said he would like to see all media outlets ask the same question, noting that the truth about the plan can only be discovered through an objective investigation.
