Turkey’s house sales see 2.36 percent rise in third quarter

Sales of houses edged up by 2.36 percent in the third quarter of 2009 over the same period of the previous year, recently released data by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) have revealed.

TurkStat disclosed its House Sales Statistics for the third quarter on Thursday.

The highest regional increase in the third quarter over the same period of 2008 in house sales figures was seen in the region encompassing the southeastern Anatolian provinces of Malatya, Elazığ, Bingöl and Tunceli by 23.4 percent.

The largest year-on-year decline in regional house sales figures, on the other hand, was in the region covering Erzurum, Erzincan and Bayburt, with 23.68 percent. Across Turkey, house sales numbers dropped in 11 regions but rose in 15.

The number of houses sold in the third quarter, however, declined by 42.53 percent over the previous quarter; not even a single region saw an increase in house sales In the third quarter, the greatest decreases in house sales compared to the second quarter were seen in Mardin, Batman, Şırnak and Siirt, with 64.18 percent. İstanbul also saw a steep decline with 59.77 percent.
