A Diyarbakır village has displayed its Kurdish name along with its Turkish name on the village sign as a result of the government’s democratic initiative, also known as the Kurdish initiative, which aims to provide more freedoms to minority groups.
The Yeşildallı village of Diyarbakır inscribed the Kurdish name of the village, Haware Xas, on its sign. Residents are pleased, saying, “Those of us who don’t speak Turkish will now understand what’s written on the sign.”

Although the villagers insist that the name of the village is “Xas Hawar,” the name is written as “Haware Xas.” One of the village elders, Arafat Dede, says: “I do not speak Turkish. The village’s name is Xas Hawar.”

Village residents, including Halil Karadaş and Orhan Karadaş, expressed pleasure at the change. “It is great because people generally do not know the Turkish name of the village. That is why it is very good,” Orhan Karadaş said.
