Kemalism - Atatürkism difference

26 November 2009 / SABAH EMRE AKÖZ,
Kemalism is the ideology of the authoritarian state with the military at its center. It is tough. It is sharp. It employs top-down methods. It is Jacobin.
Atatürkism, on the other hand, is the light version of the same ideology at a time when the economy has become liberal. It is more tolerant compared to Kemalism. It does not wear a fur cap, but a necktie. It emphasizes persuasion instead of coercion. Kemalism favors coups. It approves military takeover and when it does not like the shape of things, it wants tanks to roll through the streets. Many Kemalists are even against the multi-party regime and democracy. On other hand, Atatürkism approves democracy, but when it has troubles, it starts to shift toward Kemalism.
