Turkish civil servants protest government

25 November 2009 / AP, ANKARA
Hundreds of thousands of Turkish civil servants across the country are walking off the job to demand the right to strike and higher wages.

Salim Uslu, leader of Hak-İş union, said Wednesday the government should amend labor laws in line with the standards of the International Labor Organization.

Turkey's nearly 2 million civil servants can join unions but cannot legally go on strike. The government sets their wages.

Uslu describes the one-day walkout as a "warning strike." The protests by public workers have affected public transportation, shut down post offices and forced hospitals to take emergency cases only.
