Two watchmen die in Konya bazaar fire

24 November 2009 / TODAY’S ZAMAN , İSTANBUL
Two night watchmen who lit a fire to keep themselves warm in a neighborhood bazaar in the Central Anatolian province of Konya died of smoke inhalation after the fire burned out of control in the early hours of Monday.
The incident took place at the Binkonut bazaar, located in the Selçuklu district. The watchmen were identified as Yılmaz Gomsu, 44, and Ramazan Kaya, 51. According to reports Gomsu and Kaya were overcome by carbon-monoxide-laden smoke and were unable to save themselves from the flames surrounding their post.

Firefighters were called to the scene by the police after someone in the neighborhood notified the police of the fire. The bodies of the watchmen were retrieved and sent to Konya Numune Hospital for an autopsy. Kaya’s friend, Turan Acar, said Kaya was a very hardworking person whose only goal was to buy a house for his family.

Noting that Kaya’s son had completed his military service a week ago, Acar said: “Kaya was very happy that his son completed his military service safe and sound. He was working hard to support his family. He was serving as a watchman at night and was delivering things on his bike during the day. His only goal was to buy a house for his family.”
