Broos’ era at Trabzonspor ends, Şenol’s set to start
The result meant heads had to roll, and that of embattled Beşiktaş coach Hugo Broos was to be the first. The first indication that the silver-haired Belgian was a goner came from Trabzonspor Chairman Sadri Şener, himself a former Broos supporter.
“We will have to re-evaluate the situation regarding our coach,” Şener said after Sunday’s debacle in İstanbul. “It appears that the coach also wants to go and if he does so, it would not be a bad idea,” he further stated. This brief remark carried a great deal of meaning and Broos acted accordingly by calling it quits.
“We intend to sign [former Trabzon and Turkey] coach Şenol Güneş, whose contract with South Korean side FC Seoul has expired,” Şener further noted.
Şener also said they will embark on a massive overhaul of the Trabzonspor team. As a first step, five players -- Gökhan Ünal, Tony Sylva, Rigobert Song, Egemen Korkmaz and Engin Baytar will be sidelined indefinitely.
Furthermore Korkmaz will be stripped of his captain title, Şener also asserted, and the new Trabzonspor captain will either be Tolga Zengin or Tayfun Cora.
Broos played for Belgian clubs Anderlecht between 1970 and 1983 and Club Brugge between 1983 and 1988. He previously coached Belgian side Molenbeek (1991), Club Brugge (1991-97), Excelsior (1997-2002), Anderlecht (2003-05), Genk (2005-08) and then Greek side Panserraikos (2008-09), which finished second from last and was relegated to the second division, before he joined Trabzonspor last summer.
