Gfk Technical Market Index (TEMAX), a business unit of the GfK Research Group, revealed that sales in the consumer technology market, which comprises consumer electronics (TV sets, MP3 players, etc.), imaging (cameras, camcorders, etc.), home appliances (refrigerators, washing machines, etc.), small home appliances (blenders, deep fryers, etc.), information technology (laptops, PCs, etc.), telecommunications (mobile phones, land phones, etc.) and office equipment (printers, fax machines, etc.) dropped in the third quarter by 5.6 percent over the same period a year ago.
According to the survey, the total market shrank to TL 3.6 billion. The telecommunications market was the only sector in the list that was spared from the decrease in sales. The 2.8 percent increase in sales of this sector largely stemmed from the campaigns of mobile phone operators as part of their intensive promotion activities for their newly launched 3G services. The market size in this sector was TL 792 million. The rate of drop in the information technology and small home appliances sectors were 1.6 percent and 2 percent, respectively.
Both home appliance and office equipment sales were down 7.6 percent in the months of July, August and September this year over the same months of 2008. In addition to this, the imaging and consumer electronics businesses both sustained significant blows to their sales, down 16.3 percent and 16.8 percent, respectively.
The IT business earned TL 662 million in Q3. Producers in the home appliances sector made total revenue of TL 1.3 billion, whereas small home appliance sales amounted to TL 306 million and office equipment sales totaled TL 38 million.
