Doctors volunteer to help needy families in Southeast during Eid al-Adha

23 November 2009 / ÇAĞLAR AVCI , İSTANBUL
Members of several civil society groups founded by doctors will be spending their Eid al-Adha holiday in Turkey’s southeastern cities to cement ties with the region’s people.
Doctors from the Physicians for Hope Foundation (ÜHDER), the Association of Health Employees (SAMEDER) and the Derman Health and Education Association (DERMANDER) will be volunteering their time and skills in southeastern Turkey, an area which has suffered from poverty and terrorism. The doctors will pay visits to selected families in the region and offer them medical assistance.

Fifteen members of ÜHDER will be in Bitlis along with members of the Bursa-based charity organization DERMANDER on the second and third days of Eid al-Adha, and they will sacrifice animals and donate the meat to poor families in the area. They will also give medical check-ups and distribute medicine to needy families free of charge. Members of SAMEDER will spend their Eid al-Adha holiday in Diyarbakır and Mardin.

In the recent years, many Turkish charity organizations have put special emphasis on efforts to strengthen their relations with people living in the predominantly ethnically Kurdish Southeast. During last year’s Eid al-Adha season, numerous businessmen’s groups, doctors and charity organizations spent their holidays in the region.
