19 November 2009 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Electricity consumption, one of the most important indicators of economic growth, grew by 6.2 percent in October over the same period last year.

According to data released yesterday by the state-owned Turkish Electricity Production Company (TEİAŞ), the first year-on-year increase in electricity consumption occurred in October 2009. Electricity consumption had been continuously falling because of the global economic crisis. The data show that October’s electricity consumption was 15.8 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) over 14.9 billion kWh in October 2008, an increase of 6.2 percent. Compared to September 2009, electricity consumption in October rose by 3.2 percent.

Comparing the first 10 months of this year to last, electricity consumption has decreased by 3.9 percent, from 166.8 billion kWh to 160.3 billion kWh.
