War of words ahead of Beşiktaş-Fener derby

Even though a Beşiktaş-Fenerbahçe derby is not always dangerous, it is always tense. The picture shows Fenerbahçe’s Brazilian players Fabio Alves da Silva “Bilica” and Gökçek Wederson (L) arguing with their Beşiktaş compatriot Mert Nobre during their Turkish Super Cup match on Aug. 2.

The Beşiktaş-Fenerbahçe soccer derby is still a few days away, but the war of words has already begun. An encounter between the Beşiktaş Black Eagles and the Fenerbahçe Yellow Canaries is not as dangerous as the “mother of all derbies” between Fenerbahçe and the Galatasaray Lions. Nonetheless, it is never a dull affair.
And the reason is not too hard to find: The winner of Saturday’s Turkcell Super League derby will not only bag the maximum points, but will also win bragging rights.

“It’s going to be a good match, no doubt about it,” Beşiktaş executive board member Bülent Deriş told Radyospor on Tuesday.

“There is no need to add to the already tense atmosphere, but the fact of the matter remains that we are in dire need of the three points. And so we must not only win, but win with flair by beating Fenerbahçe hands down,” he asserted.

“Our coach Mustafa [Denizli] Hodja said we have problems scoring. But this match will be different. And I say we are going to score a lot of goals against Fenerbahçe and win by a wide margin,” Deriş gloated.

“In the last five or six matches, we have obtained good results [in the domestic league though, not in Europe]. We are going to entertain Fenerbahçe in the best possible way and also send them home in the best possible way [empty-handed],” he added, rather sarcastically.

Victory is ours, saith Emre

However, Turkey and Fenerbahçe attacking midfielder Emre Belözoğlu begs to differ. At a press conference at the Samandıra Can Bartu facilities in İstanbul on Tuesday, Belözoğlu said that Saturday’s derby is certainly going to be tough, but his team will emerge victorious nonetheless.

“Every match is very important for us and the Beşiktaş encounter is one of them,” Belözoğlu said. “The derby atmosphere is always something else. But after beating Galatasaray [3-1], we want to do the same to Beşiktaş,” he further stated.

“Beşiktaş has the home turf advantage. But we want to win all our matches and so must do everything possible to accomplish this feat,” he added.

The Beşiktaş Black Eagles want to win and the Fenerbahçe Yellow Canaries do not want to lose. Saturday’s derby at the BJK İnönü Stadium in İstanbul promises to be a thriller.
