A gentlemanly illusion

19 November 2009 / ZAMAN BEJAN MATUR,
At all of the meetings I have attended recently, the sensitivities felt by the families of slain soldiers are mentioned. There are questions that start with the word “but” and continue with the phrase “but those people also…”
The groups being referred to as “those” are those who are left by the wayside, outside of society. But what are we doing to win “those” people over? What sort of sensitivity do we have to the fact that by calling them “those,” we are only distancing ourselves further? As I see it, the greatest problem faced by Turkish society is that positive discrimination has not taken root as a cultural code in society. If there is a general feeling of grievance on the part of society, we really do need to stop and look at where it all began. We, who have been raised within the parameters of a gentleman’s illusion, now need to ask out loud who the real gentleman of the regime is.
