TEMSAN, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, will install small, mini, and micro hydroelectric plants as part of the development project to take advantage of the hydroelectric potential of the eastern Black Sea region.
According to the project’s estimates, there is 3,000 megawatts (MW) of hydroelectric potential in the provinces of Giresun, Trabzon, Rize, Artvin, Ordu, Bayburt and Gümüşhane. The project’s goals are to install 2,000 micro hydroelectric plants with a production capacity of 0.5 MW to 1 MW of electricity for an initial cost of $120 million and to derive a yearly income of $200 million from the equipment.
The project intends to be a fully renewable energy source for small to medium-sized businesses and to create employment both from the project itself and from the falling energy costs it will bring. DOKHES will also make it unnecessary to revamp electricity distribution systems for customers far from city centers. Moreover, TEMSAN hopes the DOKHES project will provide environmental benefits by decreasing the number of trees cut for home heating.
The project needs approval from the Ministry for Energy and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the relevant local municipalities, some provincial administrations and the Turkish Electricity Distribution Company (TEDAŞ) to continue, and will be financed by a fund managed by the DOKHES Union and specific provincial administrations.
