Hacı Ünal, a resident of the eastern province of Bingöl, has become the 44th Turkish sandblaster to die from silicosis. Ünal, 24, died earlier this week after battling the disease for around two years. He reportedly worked as a sandblaster in İstanbul for three years before he was diagnosed. Ünal, who was married with two children, was buried in the Taşlıçay village of Bingöl. He was Bingöl’s ninth silicosis victim. Silicosis, also known as grinder’s disease, is a occupational form of lung disease caused by the inhalation of crystalline silica dust and is marked by inflammation and scarring in the form of nodular lesions in the lungs.
As manually sandblasted jeans and denim became popular among youth in Turkey and abroad, illegal and unregistered workshops appeared all over the country to capitalize on the increasing demand.
