Boat carrying 30 immigrants sinks in Aegean Sea

18 November 2009 / TODAY’S ZAMAN WITH WIRES , İSTANBUL
A small boat carrying 30 illegal immigrants en route to the Greek islands sank off the Aegean coast of Bodrum on Tuesday. Most of the immigrants swam to the coast, while some were saved by fishing boats.
Attempting to go to the Greek islands illegally, at least 30 people, including five children and eight women from Afghanistan, Palestine and Myanmar, left the Bitez coast of Bodrum in an eight-meter-long boat. However, the boat sank after a short time.

Gendarmerie teams that arrived at the scene took the illegal immigrants to the Bodrum District Gendarmerie Command. The illegal immigrants were reportedly in good health. A boat belonging to the gendarmerie investigated the situation, and according to the initial results of the investigation, no one died in the incident. The interrogation of the illegal immigrants is still under way.
