16 November 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
The Ministry of Health on Monday announced that the number of deaths in Turkey from the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, had risen to 73. A total of 249 people are receiving treatment in hospitals and of these, 56 are in intensive care.

Twenty-one swine flu inpatients are being kept alive by respirators. A Ministry of Health statement also said that in proportion to the population, swine flu-related deaths are five times higher for those who have a chronic illness. The statement also noted that health centers on Monday started vaccinating people in high-risk groups in the second round of a vaccination campaign against H1N1 influenza. Individuals suffering from chronic diseases and children under the age of 5 are now eligible to receive swine flu shots.

The death toll resulting from swine flu rapidly increased over the last 20 days and reached 73 as of Monday.
