A coalition known as 70 Million Steps against Coups yesterday staged a demonstration in İzmir to demand the trial of all junta members in the Turkish military.

Making a statement on behalf of the coalition, Mualla Damarsardı criticized the release of Col. Dursun Çiçek last Friday while demanding the trial of all junta members in the ranks of the armed forces. Çiçek’s signature appears on an army plot to destroy the government.

Çiçek was arrested last week when prosecutors conducting the Ergenekon investigation obtained the original of the army plot with Çiçek’s “wet signature.”

However, he was released after a brief detention on Friday, with the İstanbul 9th Criminal Court citing its reason as “the suspect has no possibility of obscuring evidence and has a permanent address where he can be found,” under Article 100 of the Code on Criminal Procedure (CMK).

Recalling that Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ, who termed the plot “a piece of paper” when a photocopy was first revealed in June, is still on active duty, Damarsardı said coup opponents did not have the slightest suspicion about the authenticity of the document.

Appealing to the coup plotters, she said: “Your resistance is in vain. We will certainly stop you who see the people living in these territories as an enemy.” Urging the government to expel from their posts Başbuğ and all junta members who were involved in coup plans, the coalition told supporters of democracy that it was time to stand up for democracy and freedom.
