The auction was held on Sunday at İstanbul’s Swissotel The Bosphorus by Antik A.Ş., Turkey’s first fine-art auction company. Bidding on the painting was opened at $1 million. Doğançay’s works are on display at 64 museums worldwide.The Doğançay painting was enthusiastically applauded by auction-goers. Following a five-minute bidding frenzy, the Blue Symphony was sold to a phone bidder. Doğançay originally sold the painting, which he says depicts the Ottoman era, 22 years ago to an art collector.
The record price for any painting by a Turkish painter is for Osman Hamdi Bey’s “İstanbul Hanımefendisi” (İstanbul Lady), which was sold for TL 8 million. Another Osman Hamdi Bey painting, “Kaplumbağa Terbiyecisi” (The Tortoise Trainer), commanded the second-highest price ever recorded for a Turkish painter’s work at TL 5 million. Sunday’s bid on the Blue Symphony is the third-highest price for a work by a Turkish painter.
