EPDK investigates hydroelectricity producers

The Energy Market Regulatory Agency (EPDK) has begun to investigate 142 firms licensed to operate hydroelectric power plants over their failure to file progress reports.

The agency last week requested that firms that haven’t filed progress reports with the agency submit written statements defending their actions and file the belated progress reports within 15 days. Under the agency’s decision, firms that do not file a progress report will be fined, while firms found not to have fulfilled their obligations will have their licenses revoked. The agency will carry out similar investigations of firms operating wind and thermal power plants.

EPDK President Hasan Köktaş announced that they plan to prevent “misuse of licenses by firms,” highlighting that the agency has revoked the wind and hydroelectric licenses of 17 firms, adding: “Firms that are licensed to produce energy from renewable energy sources are required to file progress reports regarding their investments every January, May and September. There are firms who have yet to do this, and we’ve requested a written statement defending their positions. In order to make sure the licenses are given to good hands that will make the necessary investments, we’re investigating firms’ progress.”

Köktaş emphasized that 2009 was an especially successful year for electricity production investments by the private sector and revealed that as of the end of September, 88 projects totaling 2,546 megawatts (MW) have been accepted and connected to the infrastructure. He added that this is the largest investment in the last seven years and greater than the investments in electricity production made in the last three years combined.
