[The Sydney Morning Herald] Uproar at Turkish plan to woo Kurds

14 November 2009 / ,
There were fiery scenes in Turkey’s parliament as the government announced its intention to broaden democratic rights for the country’s Kurdish minority.
The government said its plan to end a 25-year Kurdish insurgency would focus on democratic rights. Opponents accused it of giving in to terrorists and undermining national unity. The debate over the democratization measures will formally begin on Friday.. The move is a central plank in Turkey’s attempt to join the European Union. In a speech on Tuesday often interrupted by shouts from opposition benches, the Interior Minister, Beşir Atalay, set out a general overview of the government’s initiative. “We believe that democratization will resolve a terrorism problem that has ethnic nationalism at its root,” Atalay told MPs. “This means an environment where everyone feels as an equal citizen of the state and is not seen as the ‘other’.”
