Sabancı calls for top rank for Turkey in climate summit

13 November 2009 / TURHAN BOZKURT, İSTANBUL
Turkey needs to rank among the developing countries in a draft agreement to be brought before the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen from Dec. 7-18 aiming to transform the Kyoto Protocol into a treaty under the EU umbrella; otherwise, the development of Turkey will be halted, Güler Sabancı, chairwoman of Sabancı Holding, said on Thursday to representatives of the media.
Pointing out the fact that Turkey is listed among the developed countries in the draft agreement that would translate the Kyoto Protocol on reducing carbon emissions, Sabancı said this will hinder the development of Turkey. “We need investments. If Turkey is treated like a developed country, then the cost of the investments will be higher. Therefore, Turkey needs to prepare for the Dec. 7 Copenhagen summit well and discuss our status again,” Sabancı noted. According to Sabancı, necessary steps should be taken to make sure that Turkey will rank among developing countries. She said Turkey needs to put this issue on agenda and change its status. “Otherwise, Turkey will face serious economic costs,” she said.
