Mothers of martyrs: How could you kill our children?

Investigators conducted a re-enactment of the day when Lt. Mehmet Tümer handed a live grenade to a private, resulting in the deaths of four soldiers.

Lt. Mehmet Tümer, who on Aug. 17 handed a live grenade to a private as punishment for an infraction, causing the deaths of four soldiers, was brought to Düztepe in the eastern province of Elazığ, where the accident occurred, on Wednesday to conduct a re-enactment, as part of a court inquest into the incident.
The mothers of the victims, who also attended the re-enactment, railed against Tümer, asking, “How could you kill our children?”

About 30 people, including Tümer, a prosecutor, lawyers and gendarmes, returned to the scene of the incident to watch theheh re-enactment and assess conditions in the area. Gendarmerie teams arrived at the scene first and checked the land for mines with detectors and dogs. The scene of the grenade blast and the place where Tümer was standing when the incident occurred were photographed, and the distance between the two places was measured.

During the re-enactment, suspect Tümer explained his version of the incident: “I gave the [live] hand grenade to İbrahim Öztürk at his position. As I left for another position, I saw Öztürk walking away. I warned him, saying ‘Return to your position.’ He returned to his position. Then he came to the position where I was making evaluations. I told him, ‘Return to your position, I will give you the grenade pin’.”

While Tümer testified, Öztürk’s mother said, “You didn’t kill only İbrahim, but also the people with him. Would you do nothing if someone gave you a bomb?”

The mother of Sgt. İbrahim Yaman, another soldier killed in the incident, displayed a photo of her son and cried, “How could he be murdered?”

The re-enactment took half an hour.

‘Nine of every 36 US soldiers don’t make it through boot camp,’ claims a defense attorney. Meanwhile, Tümer appeared before a military court on Wednesday. During the hearing, Tümer’s lawyer, Behiç Cantürk, claimed that people call the US Army “the strongest army,” saying: “In documentaries I have seen about the US Army, nine out of every 36 soldiers in the US Army fail basic training. Bullets pass two centimeters over soldiers.”

Official documents, including manuals and instructions related to training in military service, were also presented to the court at the request of Cantürk. The trial was adjourned until Nov. 20.
