Staying warm while looking pretty: Is it possible?

13 November 2009 / REYHAN YAZICI*,
A coat is both the most important and most difficult item to shop for during the winter season. People generally want their coats, which they will be wearing all the time during the winter, to be both pretty and useful as well comfortable.
Unlike other items, coats are not bought to be worn for just one season. They are articles of clothing that can be worn for many years. This season coats have been combined with rich materials that appeal to different tastes. This winter’s designs were inspired by cashmeres, camel hair fabric, thick herringbone patterns, leather, smooth elegant velvets, waterproof polyesters and indispensable imitation fur.

Coat classics

While the length of coats may vary, thick stitches and camel hair are always classics for the fashion world. Though there is a visible difference in the cuts of this season’s styles, the details around the arm and collar are especially eye-catching. Shoulder pads and masculine shoulder cuts reminiscent of 1980s styles particularly stand out. Many collections feature ruffles, pleats, stiff and broad shoulder designs and big pockets. Classic style coats that have darts come in double-breasted style, wide collars, sewn in belts and extravagant arm and shoulder details. Set-in sleeves have been replaced by raglan sleeves.

Wearing your coat for many years

Coats: Black continues to be a favorite color this season. Other popular colors include browns, dark greens and reds, gray tones and the bright neon colors of the ‘80s such as yellow, orange, electric blue and all pink tones.

Suggestions: If you want to be able to wear a coat for many years, then you must first and foremost pay attention to the quality of the fabric. Coats made with camel hair and that have thin stitch patterns are a classic and will never go out of fashion. Plain cuts that have simple arm and collar details are a good pick for women who like to look elegant. But if you want to keep up with the latest trends and if your waist is not too big, then you can opt for coats that have thick belts. While tall women should choose coat lengths that fall under the knee, short women should opt for shorter styles. If you have broad shoulders, never go for coats with shoulder pads and exaggerated arm designs. Raglan sleeves could make shoulders appear broader than they normally are. For coats to wear over two-piece suits, buy one that is a size bigger.

New coat styles

This season, embroidered coats and jackets with hints of gothic trends are especially popular. Among the appealing styles in the 2009-2010 fall/winter collection, there are designs that are both pretty and sporty. Combining cuts inspired by architecture with knee-length styles adds elegance to these coats. The main elements of this style are double row buttons, a hidden placket, big stiff collars, low cut or bat sleeves and a cloak-like shape. Another feature of this style, which is both more plain and more exquisite than other styles, is that it isn’t tight fitting.

Cloak-like jackets, leather-fur coats and styles with removable fur collars are also in style this season. Almost every style features a belt. Some coats include low-cut three-quarter length sleeves and geometric designs. Leopard and zebra prints are among the most commonly used patterns this season. Among the season’s innovations are small checkers and special fabrics. Militaristic coats feature a combination of military-style buttons and shoulders and minimalist style. Bows and pleats attract the attention of women who like to look pretty and elegant.

Color: This season’s color palette includes beige, all gray tones, especially silvery grays, fuchsia, black and brown, especially cappuccino. Bolder women can try dirty whites, ecru tones and all neon colors.

Suggestions: Minimalist coats look very elegant as long as you choose the right combinations. Coats with bat sleeves could make you look bigger than you are. I recommend that people with thin frames use this style. Cloak-like coats look especially chic with pants and pencil skirts. If you prefer sporty styles, try coats that have many buttons.
