Professor Necdet Subaşı, moderator of the workshop, said they will discuss how Alevism is seen in the media, what kind of language is used and must be used when discussing the Alevi question and positive and negative contributions made by the media to the Alevi issue, noting that they had transcribed the discussions of the last four workshops. Subaşı continued, stating that they will prepare a report concerning solutions to the Alevi question after the completion of the seventh workshop in December and that they will relay their report to the government as a road map to a solution.
Stating that for the first time in the history of the Turkish Republic, a government is dealing with the Alevi question, Habertürk Television journalist Yiğit Bulut said he will focus on the development of the Alevi question from the time of the Ottoman Empire to the Turkish Republic.
Journalist and author Ali Bulaç stated that he will refer to Alevis as one of the colors of Turkey during the workshop and that Alevis must also have the same basic rights as other colors of the country, adding that “the Alevi question is not a problem between Sunnis and Alevis but a problem between Alevis and the state. Thus, it is wrong to say there is a problem between two sects or two peoples in order to harm societal peace. However, most of the time the idea is spread that there is conflict between Sunnis and Alevis and that Sunnis do not like to give Alevis rights, and I will talk about how these fallacies are incorrect.”
Agos newspaper Editor-in-Chief Etyen Mahçupyan said the Alevi issue must be examined within the scope of politics, stressing that he has used politics in a positive way. “I think that there will be different ideas among Alevis. There will be a discussion about that, too, and such an opening will take place,” he said.
Sabah daily’s Mehmet Barlas also stressed that he will focus on the need for empathy and said, “I will highlight the need for empathy and that different sections of society must understand each other.”
Noting that he is happy to be invited to the workshop, journalist Uğur Dündar said Turkey’s Alevi citizens have been expecting and dreaming of some improvement in their situation for years and adding that he will be at the workshop to show his support.
The session will bring together several journalists, including Bulaç, Bulut, Barlas, Mahçupyan, Dündar, Ali Bayramoğlu, Ergun Babahan, Mustafa Karaalioğlu, Erdal Şafak, Fehmi Koru, Hakan Albayrak, Oral Çalışlar, Ali Kırca, Ahmet Hakan, Can Dündar, Emre Kongar, İsmail Küçükkaya, Mehmet Ali Birand, Neşe Düzel, Ömer Laçiner, Taha Akyol and Ertuğrul Özkök.
