“La Bohème,” the İstanbul State Opera’s first new production of the 2009-2010 season, received a standing ovation from İstanbul’s opera-goers at its opening at the Süreyya Opera House over the weekend, earning acclaim for both its director and its young cast.
Giacomo Puccini’s opera classic in four acts, which tells of the love between a seamstress named Mimi and a poet, Rodolfo, in Paris in the 1830s, had its season premiere on Saturday at the historic Süreyya Opera House, originally built as a movie theater in 1927 and converted into an opera house in 2007.Italian stage director Flavio Trevisan’s rendition of “La Bohème,” one of the most frequently performed pieces of opera, stars a rotating cast of Gülbin Kunduz, Hande Soner and Ayşegül Karkıner as Mimi, and Bülent Külekçi and Cenk Bıyık as Rodolfo.
Staged in its original Italian with electronic subtitles in Turkish, Trevisan’s “La Bohème” will have three more performances this week on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Additional performances are slated for Dec. 11 and 12. The opera will also be staged in February.
