10 November 2009 / STAR ŞAMİL TAYYAR,
In the wake of the controversies surrounding the signed “coup plan” document, the position of Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ has become a subject of debate.
There are increasing calls for Başbuğ to be relieved of his duties, from both liberal and conservative circles. The fact that Berat Özipek, a writer for the Star newspaper, said, “Had [former Prime Minister Turgut] Özal been alive, he would have done what was called for and would have removed Gen. Başbuğ from his position,” and that, what’s more, Özipek was widely applauded for this statement has added a new dimension to this whole argument. After all, had Erdoğan followed the advice of academics, not only would his political party not exist today, he would be banned from politics. A person needs to know how to be in the right place at the right time.
