The likelihood that Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir will not visit Turkey has increased, particularly in the face of comments and responses coming from international circles.
Ankara has conveyed a polite message to Khartoum stating that the Sudanese president’s visit might create problems. In fact, if it had taken place a year ago, this trip might not have caused such a big reaction. However, due to a lack of any remarkable progress in the European Union process, the rising tension with Israel and the recent debates about a “shift of axis” in Turkish foreign policy, al-Bashir’s visit to İstanbul has become a point of arguments in the international media and in European capitals that say the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) has tilted toward the East.
