Poverty line continues to increase in October

Research by the Turkish Public Workers’ Labor Union (Kamu-Sen) has revealed that the poverty line for a family of four in October 2009 was TL 2,864.25, an increase of TL 39.69, or 1.41 percent, from the previous month.

According to the union’s Subsistence Index, using the Turkish Statistics Institute’s (TurkStat) October 2009 price indices, a working individual’s poverty line was TL 436.37 for October 2009, an increase of 1.19 percent from figures in September.

The statement also noted that average housing and food costs for a family of four were TL 1,100.19 for October. According to the data, “taking into account monthly spending on transportation, health, education, communication, clothing and other necessities, an average civil servant’s family is left with TL 225.67 from his October wage.”
