Twelve people have been detained and referred to an İstanbul court after a recent operation carried out by the İstanbul Police Department’s Anti-Terror Unit in the Bağcılar, Bakırköy, Bahçeşehir and Esenyurt districts of İstanbul, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday.
According to a written statement released on Friday by the unit, the operation was carried out in cooperation with the police department’s intelligence unit in order to catch terrorists who extort money to help finance the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Eleven of the suspects were caught by the police, but one alleged terrorist, who was actively involved in armed PKK activities in their camps outside Turkey, surrendered. It was noted in the unit’s statement that two unlicensed guns, 11 bullets and one shotgun as well as documents and publications of the terrorist organization were seized in the operation.Meanwhile, a written statement released by the governorate of the eastern province of Bitlis yesterday noted that two PKK members, aged around 25, were killed in the district of Mut on Thursday.
