‘Diyanetspor’ takes its place in amateur league

The Diyanet Youth and Sports Club, established in 2007 by the Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), has put together a soccer team.
The team, wearing blue, green and white, comprises 23 imams (prayer leaders), eight muezzins (men who recite the call to prayer) and 25 imam-hatip high school students. Coach Enver Karaköse, a religious official, also serves as a referee in the Turkish Soccer Federation (TFF).
The team is currently training to make it into the İzmir 2nd Amateur League. İzmir Mufti İbrahim Acar said the team was put together to promote the importance Islam gives to being fit and healthy. “Health is very important in our religion and playing sports makes people healthy,” he said. Diyanetspor is involved in other activities aside from soccer, including tennis, volleyball, badminton, wrestling, karate, judo, kickboxing, shooting and chess.
