Antalya piano festival marks 10th year with 10 concerts

The Antalya International Piano Festival, one of the two major artistic events held annually in Antalya, is marking its 10th birthday this year with a host of activities, proving the Mediterranean city is more than just a popular holiday destination famous for its sea and sun.
Organized by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality under the direction of world-famous Turkish classical pianist and composer Fazıl Say, the festival opened yesterday and is scheduled to run through Nov. 21, featuring 10 concerts in its 10th year.

The festival's opening concert on Wednesday night at the Antalya Culture Center (AKM) featured Say with a group of other classical performers from Turkey including violinist Cihat Aşkın, neyzen (reed flute player) Burcu Karadağ, cellist Çağ Erçağ, bandoneon player Tolga Salman and baritone Güvenç Dağüstün. The same performance is to be repeated tonight, the second night of the festival.

Other performers on the festival bill include Moldovan violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, who frequently collaborates in concerts and recordings with Say, and her musician parents, Emilia Kopatchinskaja and Viktor Kopatchinsky, who will take to the AKM stage on Saturday for a concert titled Tzigane Night.

Two internationally acclaimed Turkish pianists, Gülsin Onay and Muhiddin Dürrüoğlu, will be accompanied by the Antalya State Opera and Ballet Orchestra in the only orchestral concert of the festival, scheduled for Nov. 9 at the AKM. Titled “Beethoven Night,” the concert will be jointly conducted by renowned maestros Rengim Gökmen and Gürer Aykal.

Multiple award-winning jazz, Latin and classical piano virtuoso Michel Camilo will be in town for the fifth concert in the lineup, scheduled for Nov. 11. Czech pianist Pavel Kaspar will present a selection of Haydn and Beethoven sonatas for festival goers at his recital on Nov. 13.

The world-famous Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, a regular performer at the festival, will take part in the festival with a quintet under the baton of their revered founder and conductor Vladimir Spivakov. They will be onstage Nov. 15.

Aziza Mustafa Zadeh, the Azerbaijani pianist-composer-singer known for her fusion of jazz and traditional Azerbaijani styles with classical and Avant-garde influences, will be onstage Nov. 17.

Spanish pianist and composer Miriam Mendez, who earned rave reviews worldwide for her debut album "Bach por Flamenco," will perform the closing concert of this year's festival on Nov. 21, presenting her newest project, “Mozart Sueño Flamenco.” Tickets can be purchased at Biletix sales points.
