4 people killed in village guard feud in Diyarbakır

5 November 2009 / TODAY’S ZAMAN WITH WIRES , İSTANBUL
An armed family altercation turned bloody in Diyarbakır’s Ergani district, leaving four people dead, news agencies reported yesterday.
The events leading to the deadly fight started when father İsmail Akyol and his son, Abbas Akyol, both village guards, argued with Necmettin Aras, also a village guard, who had married into their family. The argument grew violent when the Akyols began to follow Aras and members of his family in their car on the Elazığ-Diyarbakır highway and shot the vehicle’s inhabitants, Aras, Süleyman Aras, Şevki Aras and Zeynep Aras.

İsmail and Abbas Akyol were caught by police soon after the attack. News reports said the feud erupted over a divorce case three months ago, when Necmettin Aras wanted to divorce his wife, who is from the Akyol family. Tensions grew between the two families when the Akyol family refused to accept the divorce, culminating in yesterday’s carnage. The deceased’s bodies will be taken to the Ergani State Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
