5 November 2009 / RADİKAL AKİF BEKİ,
As we all know, regulations concerning the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in Turkish agriculture have been published. And now the subject has really begun to be debated in Turkey.
The voices of Deniz Baykal, food movements and agricultural concerns have started to rise on the subject. Of course, there is a trade aspect to this business, too. But until now, no one has really woken up to the true dangers of GMOs as presented by William Engdahl. At the same time, though, recognizing this particular society’s propensity for conspiracy theories, I am quite sure that the theory of “food wars” will soon take root in Turkey. Whether or not we will enter into a new world war over these GMOs is unclear. But there is no doubt that the question is ready to ignite our own internal politics here in Turkey.
