Commanders and the General Staff

4 November 2009 / STAR ESER KARAKAŞ ,
The crisis surrounding the signed “coup plan” document has once more brought the odd dimensions of civilian-military relations in our country to the top of the agenda.
In the past, we have witnessed a similar sort of peculiarity in these relations. For years and years, a significant portion of Turkish society -- including even those who openly criticized military intervention in elected governments -- were not really open to debating the real nature and character of those commanding the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK). As I see it, our experiences in recent years have shown that, in fact, the real problem where the TSK is concerned is one which goes above and beyond the institution’s infidelity to democracy and a justice-based nation.
