Bugün: “They are jealous of Turkey,” read the headline of the daily’s main story yesterday, quoting remarks from President Abdullah Gül, who responded to allegations that Turkey was turning to the East rather than the West in the wake of the government’s recent efforts to improve its ties with its Eastern neighbors. “Nobody should worry. Turkey is on the right path; it proceeds in all directions,” Gül said, adding that those who argue that Turkey is turning its face to the East and moving away from the West either lack knowledge, are jealous of Turkey or sincerely worry [that an EU that does not know the value of Turkey will no longer be a global player a decade from now].Taraf: A front-page article in the daily yesterday reported statements from retired military judge Faik Tarımcıoğlu, who said Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ will rid the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) of junta members. Regardless of whether a coup attempt fails or succeeds, it is always followed by an elimination process within the TSK, said Tarımcıoğlu. “The junta in the TSK will be eliminated by Başbuğ himself; otherwise the degeneration of the TSK will spread to the entire institution,” he said.
