Atalay: Kurdish initiative aimed at stopping suffering

Beşir Atalay
3 November 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
The interior minister stated yesterday that with its Kurdish initiative, the government is working to stop the country’s terrorism-caused pain and put an end to the bitterness experienced in the southeastern part of the country, after viewing the film “Nefes” (Breath) in Ankara.

“Our only purpose is to prevent a repetition of the bitter scenes in this film, to stop the suffering and bring peace to the country,” Interior Minister Beşir Atalay said after watching the movie.

Responding to reporters’ questions, Atalay congratulated the film’s director and actors and complimented the high quality of the production. Noting that there are many scenes showing the security forces’ long battle against terrorism, the minister underlined that feelings such as altruism, self sacrifice, aspiration and courage find a place in the film, along with suffering.

Atalay said that the movie reminds viewers that soldiers are also human beings, adding that the military has been fighting terrorism for 25 years in the southeastern provinces of the country.
