The KGM aims to eliminate the kilometers-long traffic jams on the bridges while making it more appealing for people to use mass transit to commute to work. This will also indirectly result in less fuel consumption.
The new proposal has been submitted to Minister of Transportation Binali Yıldırım for approval. The toll for crossing the bridges is currently TL 3.25, with subscribers of electronic toll collection systems (OGS and KGS) enjoying a 20 percent discount. The KGM plans to eliminate the discount for KGS users due to the backups it causes, while OGS users will continue to benefit from a reduced toll.
The application of different fees at different times is employed in many places around the world. For instance, the toll on the George Washington Bridge in New York City is $8 during rush hour, while it drops to $6 for the rest of the day. If there are more than three people in the vehicle, then the price falls by another $2.
