Yaşar’s death brings the total death toll caused by the weekend’s weather to five as it comes after the death of a baby in Yalova and three children in Mardin on Sunday. Later in the day on Monday, truck driver Hüseyin Gün was drowned when his truck was dragged into a nearby lake by flood waters.
In Yalova, a resident identified as Şener Adalı and his 6-month-old son Mert were crossing a wooden bridge in the Kocadere district when the bridge collapsed and they were overtaken by floodwaters. Adalı survived, but his baby drowned.
In the Dargeçit district of Mardin, 13-year-old Mevlüde Aslan and her younger sister Sadiye Aslan drowned in floodwaters from a river that had burst its banks as they tended sheep. The bodies of the two sisters were found 15 kilometers from the place where they had been working.
Also on Sunday, 3-year-old Nezir Aksak drowned in Derik, Çataltepe, when he fell into a river.
In Şırnak, a person who was lost after being dragged by floodwaters was still reported missing as of yesterday.
Weekend floods caused serious property damage in many cities. In Siirt, schools were closed on Monday due to the further risk of flooding.
In İstanbul, some İDO ferry trips were canceled due to weather warnings. In Samsun a dry cargo boat ran aground due to a storm in the area. The 10-person crew had been rescued by early afternoon.
In Siirt, torrential downpours and ensuing floods closed the road between the Kekliktepe and Dağdöşü villages. A local official warned residents to take precautions as further heavy rains are expected.
Officials in Edirne also warned against more rains on Tuesday and Wednesday; however, they noted that temperatures in the region -- which are about 9 degrees Centigrade -- are expected to go up by 3 to 5 degrees.
Officials in Kahramanmaraş intensified safety measures against heavy rains, cleaning out city drains and manholes. Mayor Mustafa Poyraz said some houses and businesses were damaged by the recent floods, which was caused by citizens’ closing drains in their neighborhood to fend off the smell.
The Mediterranean city of Mersin was also negatively affected by heavy rains.
Meanwhile, in Uludağ, Turkey’s most popular ski resort, located in Bursa, snow reached 50 centimeters yesterday.
There was also snow in Gümüşhane. Drivers caught off guard passing through the Zigana Crossing -- located at an altitude of 2,000 meters -- had great difficulty due to snowfall yesterday. Officials warned area drivers to install snow chains on their vehicles.
Sivas and Ankara yesterday greeted the first snow of the year, also causing difficulty to unprepared drivers. There were similar difficulties due to snowfall in the cities of Karaman and Konya.
Snow thickness in Ilgaz Dağı, another important ski resort in Kastamonu, reached 25 centimeters.
