Beşiktaş vies for vital points against Wolfsburg at İnönü

3 November 2009 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkish champion Beşiktaş hosts German champion VfL Wolfsburg in game four of their UEFA Champions League Group B game at İstanbul’s İnönü Stadium this evening.
The Black Eagles, who have recovered from their worst start to a season in history, got their first Champions League point after a 0-0 away with Wolfsburg two weeks ago. This evening, the Black Eagles will be seeking their first maximum points.

And the Eagles can make it if coach Mustafa Denizli fields a team capable of scoring. Brazilian-Turkish striker Mert Nobre and veteran midfielder Yusuf Şimşek both played at pedestrian pace in the Eagles’ hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ankaragücü in the domestic league on Saturday.

And so there should be no place on the Beşiktaş squad for these two players until they drastically improve their performance. This means Denizli will very likely start with Turkey international striker Nihat Kahveci, if he is fit to play, and Brazilian Bobo upfront.

First-choice keeper Rüştü Reçber, Chile leftie Rodrigo Tello and young defender İsmail Köybaşı are all injured and therefore doubtful today. But if Ekrem Dağ and Germans Fabian Ernst and Michael Fink can support the attacking force from midfield, then the beloved Black Eagles need fear no evil.

Manchester United hosts CSKA Moscow in the other Group B match today.
