Osman Süslü, the mayor of Uçhisar, a town in Nevşehir famed for its boutique and cave-home hotels, told the Anatolia news agency that a special cemetery was to be designated for the burial of non-Muslims who had become attached to Cappadocia and wanted to be buried here. Many non-Muslim expatriates live in the region, he noted, and the construction of the cemetery will therefore meet a longstanding and critical need. He said work on the cemetery has already begun and that it will constitute a separate section within the town’s existing cemetery.
“There’s no shortage or problem related to cemeteries for Turks in Uçhisar, but there’s now a need for a cemetery for foreigners who live here and want to be laid to rest here after their death. Fort this reason, we’ve set to work to address this. As soon as possible we’ll have a cemetery for non-Muslims up and running,” Süslü said.
