The public wonders if there will be accounting for what was done

31 October 2009 / MUSTAFA ÜNAL, ZAMAN
One full week has now passed since the Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) confirmed that the “coup document” sent to the prosecutor’s office is in fact genuine.

Since then, there has been mass indignation on the part of the public, expressing the emotion that “whatever needs to be done should be done.” The public has been angered; they say, “Let those who prepared this document account for their actions.”

The document is the top item in the Turkish media, and there is agreement amongst columnists that this coup plan constitutes a serious crime. Yesterday evening, Prime Minister Erdoğan and Gen. İlker Başbuğ had a surprise face-to-face meeting. From the very beginning, Erdoğan has reacted angrily to this plan, which directly targets his party. How will this stain be cleansed? The answer to this question will emerge in the wake of the meeting between Erdoğan and Başbuğ.
