Efes Pilsen back in Euroleague contention after home victory

31 October 2009 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Efes Pilsen gave Serbian side Partizan a good basketball lesson with a commanding 77-67 victory at the packed Abdi İpekçi Sports Arena in İstanbul on Thursday night.

Efes, having been beaten 77-70 on the road by Lithuania’s Lietuvos Rytas in game 1, made sure there was no mistake at Abdi İpekçi. The victory means Efes improved to 1-1 and is tied for third behind unbeaten frontrunners Unicaja and Lietuvos Rytas, thereby boosting its Top 16 chances.

Charles Smith was Efes’ top scorer with 18 points, followed by Preston Shumpert with 17 and Igor Rakocevic with 14. Aleks Maric was the best player on the Partizan team with 19 points, while Bo McCalebb and Jan Vesely added 10 apiece.

Poor Partizan dropped to 0-2 and could face early elimination unless it relearns the act of winning.
